Smart Money with Keith Springer- Giant Squid Invades Washington

Giant Squid Invades Washington

Written by Keith Springer 10.11.13

squidClearly a giant squid is invading Washington, as anyone with even half a brain is nowhere to be found. Not only are the follies an embarrassment, but they are also wreaking havoc on every American’s retirement goals and dreams. Most of our investment dollars are either in retirement accounts or part of a plan for us to accumulate enough wealth to retire comfortably, and hopefully younger than we originally hoped; that financial freedom we all hope for. The games the politicians are playing are hurting every one of us, that is of course unless you are a U.S. Senator or Congressman whose pensions and health benefits are set in stone for all eternity, regardless of whatever havoc they wreak on the population.

It is truly hard to believe that either side would let a catastrophic default occur. Yet from their partisan banter, they just might be believing that they can blame the other side…and get away with it. It reminds me of when we convinced ourselves that we could actually win a nuclear war. This is ever more reason to not get complacent with your financial planning and make sure it is personally designed for your own individual needs and goals, every day of the week.

With Washington closed down, we will not get any economic data releases from the government, so all we will have is political rhetoric to decide the direction of the markets. What is even more scary is that Tea Party activists hate Obama so much that Armageddon is welcome if it meant the end of his term. This implies that the impasse will last longer than many think. And for me that absolutely stinks because I was planning on going to the Grand Canyon and Arches National Park for the first time when I visit Josh for parents weekend at the University of Arizona in Tucson next week.

We cannot easily change how our political leaders behave,  but we can choose how we react to their policies and safeguard our finances. The key is to be properly invested so we are getting the best returns with the least risk possible, just as the Springer investment approach is designed to do by managing risk and delivering returns in any market.
